About WEG Electric Machinery (WEM)

WEM Old factory

WEM was established as a service shop in 1891 and started manufacturing motors in 1897. With over a century of experience, WEM has solidified its reputation as a leading designer, manufacturer, and service provider of large, custom-engineered electric motors and generators. WEM operates domestically in the U.S. and internationally, serving a diverse range of clients and industries including oil and gas, power generation, nuclear, pulp and paper, mining, and general industrial sectors.

WEM Old Motor The picture to the left is a two-pole, direct-current type motor, rated 7.5 hp, 1350 rpm, 220 volts. Manufactured approx. 1898. It weighed approx. 800 lbs and cost $175.00. We still have the motor running in our lobby today.

In the early 1970s, WEM introduced its revolutionary Duraguard TM insulation system, utilizing epoxy resin tape and vacuum/pressure impregnation (VPI), which has been recognized as the benchmark of insulation systems for large machines worldwide. With an installation list boasting over 250,000 units globally, WEM continues to excel in the industry.

In December 2011, Electric Machinery joined the WEG Group, ushering in significant improvements at the Minneapolis factory through process enhancements and the integration of state-of-the-art technology. Leveraging expertise from WEG headquarters in Brazil and the support of a global sales structure, WEM has experienced remarkable growth since the merger.

WEM's product applications encompass synchronous and induction motors for driving various equipment such as pumps, compressors, blowers, fans, and ball mills. Additionally, WEM generators are driven by a diverse range of gas, steam, and hydro turbines, as well as reciprocating engines. WEM's magnetic drive, variable-speed couplings are used with fans and pumps up to 2500 HP.

Operating from its 425,000 square foot facility in Minneapolis and maintaining all activities under one roof, WEM serves its customers with excellence and commitment. With sales offices strategically located in key cities and a network of sales representation organizations, WEM is dedicated to meeting customers' needs worldwide. Backed by an experienced team of service engineers, WEM ensures the highest levels of quality, durability, and reliability, upholding its reputation as a trusted industry leader into its second century of operation.

By handling all activities internally, WEM can closely oversee the entire process of constructing a machine, from the proposal stage through shipment and service support.
