WEG participated in all stages of the modernization project of the Bongi Substation in Recife, Brazil, strengthening the power supply system of the metropolitan area surrounding the capital of Pernambuco. Completed in the second half of 2025, the project significantly increased the substation’s transformation capacity, from 400 MVA to 900 MVA of installed power, providing greater reliability, operational flexibility, and safety to the region’s electrical system.
The project was part of the transmission network reinforcement plan authorized by ANEEL (Brazil’s National Electric Energy Agency) and included the complete modernization of the substation infrastructure, including the upgrade of 230 kV and 69 kV busbars, replacement of switching equipment, modernization of electrical connections, and expansion of the unit’s transformation capacity.
With extensive experience in supplying solutions for power generation, transmission, and distribution, WEG was responsible for the manufacturing, supply, assembly, and energization of two 200 MVA 230/69 kV transformers and two additional 200 MVA 230/69 kV/13.8 kV transformers, marking the completion of the Bongi Substation expansion.
In addition, WEG supplied a comprehensive range of high-voltage equipment and solutions, directly contributing to increased system robustness and operational reliability, including:
- Current and voltage transformers;
- 245 kV and 72.5 kV circuit breakers;
- Disconnect switches;
- Surge arresters;
- Hybrid module for the 69 kV busbar;
- Protection, Control, and Supervision Systems (PCSS);
- Assembly supervision, commissioning, and energization services.
Through this project, WEG directly contributes to the socioeconomic development of different regions by supplying products and solutions that improve the reliability and efficiency of electrical power supply, supporting urban growth, strengthening energy infrastructure, and helping provide a better quality of life for local communities.
