What is MEPS compliance?

MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) are regulations implemented by governments worldwide to set minimum energy efficiency requirements for various types of equipment, including electric motors.

The goal of MEPS is to remove inefficient products from the market and encourage the adoption of higher efficiency technologies, ultimately reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

In South Africa, the specific MEPS for electric motors is defined by the VC 9113 regulation, which requires compliance with IE3 or higher efficiency levels, starting June 2025.

Is August 2025 on your radar? It should be, if you depend on electric motors to support operational delivery, productivity, and profitability.

Why become MEPS compliant?

Top reasons for implementing MEPS

MEPS reduces energy consumption

MEPS reduces energy consumption

Electric motors account for approximately 40% of global electricity consumption. MEPS aim to reduce this significant energy waste by ensuring that only energy-efficient motors are available in the market.
MEPS mitigates environmental impact

MEPS mitigates environmental impact

Reducing energy consumption directly leads to lower carbon dioxide emissions and a decreased environmental impact associated with power generation
MEPS aligns with international best practices

MEPS aligns with international best practices

South Africa has introduced VC 9113, its MEPS specification, which is based on IEC standards, aligning with global efforts to harmonize energy efficiency regulations.

MEPS reduces energy consumption

By minimising energy waste through improved motor efficiency, MEPS contribute to a more effective strategy for securing energy availability, particularly in the short term.
MEPS supports sustainable development

MEPS supports sustainable development

MEPS support sustainable development by promoting the use of energy-efficient technologies and reducing reliance on natural resources for power generation.

Frequently asked questions about MEPS

Are motor importers allowed to import or supply IE1 or IE2 motors after June 2025?
The VC 9113 Minimum Energy Performance does not allow the import or supply of electric motors covered by the above scope to be less than IE3 efficiency.
But what if the suppliers still have stock of IE1 or IE2 motors?
The industry is expected to put in place mechanisms to ensure that on the implementation date, all motors on the market comply with the requirements of the compulsory specification. However, should there be any existing stock on the market at the time of implementation, each importer or supplier should apply for sales permits. If the application is deemed successful, the importer or supplier will be granted a 12-month period to assist in depleting of the stock.
Can I compare efficiency values between different makes of motors?
Yes, if the efficiency values are based on the specified testing method. So, it is important to know that the motors were manufactured and tested in line with IC 60034-2-1. The manufacturer's documentation must indicate which testing method is used.
Are hazardous area motors included in this specification?
Yes. Motors for hazardous area locations (for example, flameproof or increased safety motors) are not excluded from the scope of VC 9113.
