Modernizing milling processes is one of the key strategies sugar and ethanol mills can adopt to increase production efficiency and maximize the potential of sugarcane. In line with this objective, Santa Lucia Mill, located in Araras, São Paulo, has replaced its traditional torque-split drive systems, commonly known as volandeiras, with a solution based on WEG planetary gearboxes.
The project involves the installation of six WEG planetary gearboxes designed for applications that require high torque capacity, robustness, and operational efficiency. The replacement of the existing drive systems contributes to increased milling capacity while offering a more compact configuration and reducing costs associated with equipment operation and maintenance.
The decision to adopt WEG technology was made following a comprehensive evaluation of the alternatives available on the market. Among the key factors considered by Santa Lucia were the reduced installation footprint, lower operating costs, and the proven technological reliability of planetary gearbox systems.
“Our experience working with the WEG team was very positive due to their expertise and commitment throughout the drive systems project”, says Oravio Servidoni Filho, Milling Coordinator Engineer at Santa Lucia Mill. According to him, the efficiency of the new drive systems is approximately 15% higher than that achieved by traditional milling systems based on volandeiras.
In addition to the immediate operational benefits, the project was developed as part of a phased modernization strategy. In its current stage, the WEG planetary gearboxes operate alongside the mill’s existing steam turbines. In a future phase, Santa Lucia may replace these turbines with electric motors, creating the conditions for an even more efficient and sustainable milling operation.
This approach highlights the flexibility of the solution, allowing the modernization process to evolve in line with the mill’s long-term technological strategy without requiring the complete replacement of drive systems in a single step.
The initiative is also aligned with Santa Lucia’s commitment to increasing productivity and operational efficiency while supporting sustainability and environmental preservation objectives. By reducing mechanical losses and preparing the operation for the future electrification of its drive systems, the project opens new opportunities for process optimization.
For WEG, the project reinforces the company’s ability to deliver high-performance solutions for critical applications within the sugar-energy sector, combining advanced technology, engineering expertise, and a deep understanding of industry-specific requirements.
With the modernization of its milling drive systems, Santa Lucia Mill continues to advance its operational evolution strategy, incorporating technology capable of delivering performance gains today while preparing the operation for the next stages of industrial transformation.
