WEG has been awarded a contract by ENGIE Brasil to supply two new generating units that will increase the capacity of the Jaguara Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Rio Grande, on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, in the municipality of Rifaina (São Paulo, Brazil). The project is aligned with ENGIE's strategy of investing in high-performance assets powered by 100% clean energy and is the result of its successful bid in Brazil's 2026 Capacity Reserve Auction, held in March this year.

The total planned investment of BRL 1.2 billion will increase the plant's installed capacity by 232 MW through the installation of two new generating units in existing shafts, each with an installed capacity of 116 MW. The new turbines are expected to begin commercial operation in 2030.

The Jaguara Hydroelectric Power Plant became part of ENGIE Brasil Energia's portfolio in 2017. The facility currently has an installed capacity of 424 MW and a firm energy capacity of 324 MW average. The concession is valid until June 2048.

Modernization works

Alongside the expansion project, the Jaguara Hydroelectric Power Plant is undergoing a comprehensive modernization program that began in July 2023. The works involve investments of more than BRL 500 million, of which approximately BRL 150 million has already been invested.

The project aims to extend the plant's service life while improving its reliability and operational efficiency. The modernization includes upgrades to the four existing generating units while maintaining the plant's total installed capacity of 424 MW. Completion of the modernization works is scheduled for 2029.
