Empresa de Energía de Pereira S.A. ESP has inaugurated the new Altagracia 33/13.8 kV Substation, a key project to reinforce the electrical system of the Altagracia district and surrounding areas. WEG was responsible for the complete supply of equipment — except for civil works — as well as the installation, integration, programming, testing, and commissioning of the entire substation, officially delivered on April 15 of this year.
The project included an extensive portfolio of solutions, such as AIS primary switchgear, protection and control switchgear for 33 kV and 13.8 kV levels, AC and DC auxiliary service systems, automation panels, communication racks, arc detectors, pad-mounted transformer, battery bank, generator set, fire-fighting system, internal and external lighting, cable trays, electrical networks, and all infrastructure required for reliable and automated operation. WEG also integrated the complete control and supervision system of the substation, ensuring safe remote operation.
With the increased capacity and installation of the new 12.5 MVA transformer, the substation was designed to significantly improve service quality and support the demand of more than 25,000 current users, with expansion potential to between 50,000 and 60,000 users in the medium to long term. The modernization also reinforces interconnection between Morelia, La Estrella, and Palmilla, optimizing the reliability of the regional electrical system.
For WEG, the project represents an important advancement in the Utilities segment, strengthening the installed base in Colombia and directly contributing to the modernization of the National Interconnected System. For Empresa de Energía de Pereira, the benefits include greater distribution capacity, improved performance indicators before CREG, and strengthened operations, as well as a more robust foundation for commercial growth in the serviced areas.
This is the largest-scale project developed to date by the WEG Automation Services unit and WEG Digital & Systems of the company’s branch in Colombia, setting a benchmark in comprehensive solutions for electrical infrastructure.
The Altagracia Substation is a testament to the joint commitment between WEG and Empresa de Energía de Pereira to deliver more reliable, modern, and safe energy to the coffee-growing region, supporting its present and future development.
