To be commercialized on EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) basis, the solution includes the supply of turbines, gearboxes, panels, capacitors, generators, and transformers, as well as engineering, procurement management, integration, and construction of solid waste gasification plants, designed for modules of 2.5 MW or 5.0 MW, with the possibility to be upgraded to higher power ratings.

With the technology WEG is offering, the MSW is processed in several steps. Initially it is turned into fuel gas upon a gasification process, totally free of harmful gases, which when burned generates heat in a steam turbine. This steam can be used to drive a turbine for power generation.

Different from the incineration process (recommended for large metropolitan centers) and from the biogas production process (used in landfills or biodigesters), the method of energy use through gasification is the most suitable for Brazilian waste since it is rich in organic content, with high humidity level and high gas generation potential. The generation system is ideal for small and medium sized cities, reducing or eliminating the need for landfills.

We will fully comply with the National Solid Waste Plan, including gas emission requirements within the required legislation, with proven technical and environmental feasibility,” says Eduardo de Nóbrega, Managing Director of WEG Energy. “Our solution is also in line with the Zero Waste Program, recently implemented by the Ministry of the Environment, which is intended to eliminate existing landfills and support municipalities in more appropriate solutions for the energy recovery of their waste,” he explains.

WEG´s technology is 100% national and, besides addressing the environmental issue, is completely viable from an economic and financial point of view. “The cost to operate a gasification plant is in line with the reality of Brazilian cities. The payback of a 2.5 MW plant is approximately 45 months”, says Eduardo, who relates other advantages to the gasification process, such as: the possibility of using all the waste without being recycled, reducing the logistics cost of waste disposal, with the possibility of building plants in strategic locations and the production of gas completely free of furans and dioxins, which eliminates the need for complex gas treatment systems.

In Brazil, more than 3000 municipalities need to adjust to the National Solid Waste Policy. The solution for power generation from the gasification of Municipal Solid Waste represents a real opportunity to comply with the country legislation, with significant environmental, economic and social impact for Brazilian municipalities.
