The pulp and paper segment in Brazil has been thriving for several years, with large-scale projects for new plants and expansions, solidifying the country’s position as one of the world’s largest exporters in this sector.
In this context, WEG stood out by expanding its supplies for Klabin’s Puma II Project, carried out between 2019 and 2023. Through Valmet, the world’s leading developer and supplier of process technologies, automation, and services for the pulp, paper, and energy industries, WEG delivered a range of solutions for Klabin’s Ortigueira Unit (PR), the largest producer and exporter of packaging paper in Brazil.
The scope of supply included the M line motor MGW (14 MW, 13.8 kV), the largest ever manufactured by WEG for this application, designed to drive the refiner in the bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) plant. Additionally, WEG provided a 660V MGP auxiliary starting motor (pony motor), the 660 V pony motor and a hydraulic unit for the MGW motor’s bearing oil system. The delivery also included a low voltage 660 V drive for the pony motor, an auxiliary transformer for the and 13.8 kV switchgear for the 14 MW motor.
WEG was responsible for the assembly supervision and start-up of the equipment, which is now fully operational at Klabin’s plant.
Klabin’s choice of WEG highlights the strong partnership between the companies and demonstrates confidence in WEG’s expertise and solutions for large-scale projects in the pulp and paper sector. Over the years, WEG’s solutions have consistently delivered operational safety, continuous productivity and efficiency for its customers and business partners.
