What is the function of the solar transformer?

The WEG solar transformer is a product developed specifically for solar generation with a differentiated daily charging cycle. It has an aluminum winding and electrostatic shielding that does not absorb as much heat from the sun, reducing the production of gases inside the transformer, bringing more useful life and reliability to renewable energy generation plants.

The growing use of renewable energy has created new requirements and challenges in the design of transformers for use in renewable energy parks. Step-up transformers for solar energy applications are subject to very specific operating conditions compared to transformers in the electrical system in general. These conditions require the design of a robust project that meets the minimum requirements to guarantee the nominal operation of the transformers under the various load situations.

Application characteristics

  • Intermittent or predictable generation with a daily cycle;
  • Current harmonics;
  • Transient overvoltages;
  • Frequent openings and reconnections, high probability of transients;
  • Frequent single-phase shorts on MV;
  • Electrostatic shielding, multiple secondary;
  • Fast response from the park to the system;
  • Demand from the system operator;
  • Frequent switching;
